Have you ever wondered what an ostrich would look like if it could fly? Yeah, so have I. After watching Samsung’s new spot for their Gear VR headset, everyone’s dreams come true. This ad features an adorably determined ostrich who stumbles across the headset. What he sees through it is endless sky and sunshine, as if he were flying, which leads to a longing to soar through the clouds like an eagle.
With the headset on, he runs around his fellow ostriches, trying to fly, but mostly stumbling and falling. The ad ends with one final flight attempt by our goofy friend. He gets a running start and to everyone’s surprise, manages to lift off into the air. The line at the end reads “We make what can’t be made, so you can do what can’t be done,” followed by #DoWhatYouCan’t.
I loved this ad and laughed the whole way through. It was light-hearted and fun, which is perfectly in-line with the product. I wish I had been in the room when the idea was first born. Can you imagine? It makes sense though, especially with the copy at the end. The copy gives this campaign so many legs, not just for commercials, but for social, print and probably even radio. I look forward to seeing where this idea carries Samsung and the creative advertising it leads to.
